STRESSED?!?!

We at Coastal Chiropractic understand stress.

Stress is a part of everyday living. In fact, a stress-free life would boring! The key to keeping your sanity is not eliminating your stress, it's how you handle and react to it that matters. Life is still enjoyable when we have ample resources to experience and overcome the stresses we face.

What kind of stress do you deal with on a daily basis?
Here are just a few main causes:

1) Physical Stress.
A whiplash injury from a car crash can cause obvious stress. Slip and fall. Lack of sleep. Overdoing it while doing yard work. Simple repetitive motions. Even as early as learning to walk, then ride a bike. Even the birth process itself is a source of physical strain (and we don't just mean mommy).

2) Chemical Stress.
Common source of chemical stress? Poor nutrition, sugar, refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats. Drugs, preservatives, smoking, vaccinations, alcohol, pollen and a host of other substances also affect our nervous systems, muscle tone and spine.

3) Emotional Stress.
Fear. Grief. Anger. We all have those feelings and those emotions affect the entire body. Notice the posture of someone who is sad or depressed. Frustration, or a sense of powerlessness at work, is a common form of emotional stress.

So, how can stress affect your spine??
Think of your spinal cord as a guitar string. The greater the tension, the higher the note right? Your nervous system has "tone" as well. With each stressor, your body tightens up, like bracing yourself for a tight curve on a roller coaster. Like the shrill notes from an over-tightened string, your body loses its capacity to respond to the full range of human experience.

Can chiropractic care solve all my stress?
Well, not ALL. Much of the emotional stress we experience is largely self-induced. Imagine how much pain and suffering result from attaching inappropriate meaning to events in our lives. Stress is a natural part of life. Chiropractic care can't eliminate stress, but it can certainly help increase your capacity to accommodate it. Dr. Drew Kycynka also coaches largely in the area of health and nutrition. When we are eating right, sleeping right and exercising our body functions better and reacts to stress in a better state of mind!
